COWDEN —
The Rev. Marvin Louis Chalfant, 80, of Cowden, passed away at 11:41 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Free Methodist Church of Cowden. The Rev. Steve Neville will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Memorials may be made to the Gateway Free Methodist Church conference. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.lockartgreenfuneralhome.com.
Chalfant was born Sept. 9, 1932, in Knob Noster, Mo., the son of William H. and Myrtle Thurston Chalfant.
Chalfant pastured for Free Methodist Church of North America Gateway Conference from July 1963 to May 1995. He married Norma Jean Tedrick on June 7, 1958, in Sterling, and she passed away July 23, 2011.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Greenville College in Greenville, in 1969 and a master degree of divinity in 1973 from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky.
Chalfant made many good memories while fishing and hunting with friends and family. He also, enjoyed building furniture, remodeling houses and making improvements to many buildings on Free Methodist campgrounds in Illinois.
Surviving are his children, Scott Allen (Jamie Lou) Chalfant, of Cowden, Dawn Marie Krohe, of Vandalia, and Kevin Lane Chalfant of New Castle, Ind.; grandchildren, Lucas (Brooke) Arthur, Sonja (Joshua) Moffitt, Kristopher Krohe, Adrianne Chalfant and Benjamin Chalfant; great-grandchildren, Evelyn Moffitt, Violet Moffitt, Joshua Moffitt, Drew Arthur, Piper Arthur and Salem Arthur; and sister, Thelma Chalfant, of St. Charles, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean; parents, William H. and Myrtle Chalfant; five brothers; three sisters; and grandchild, Molly Arthur.
