Col. Thomas Peters

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Col. Thomas E. Peters,  USAR-Ret., 91, of Dunedin, Fla., went to rest at home on Saturday, 22 Dec. 2012.

Col. Peters will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760 or the AlzheimerÕs Association at   www.alzfdn.org or www.NationalCremation.com.

He was born on 13 July 1921, in Effingham. Col. Peters had a distinguished military career from 1940 until 1970. He began with the 106th Calvary (Blackhorse Troop) Regiment in 1940; attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) and was assigned to the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. He served in three wartime assignments beginning in the Pacific Theater in Hawaii and Guam during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War (MACV). He was stationed in various places in the U.S. and Europe: Fifth U.S. Army Headquarters in Chicago; (USAREUR) ordnance depot operations in Poitiers and Verdun, France; Continental Army Command in Ft. Monroe, Va. His final assignment was to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Data Processing Center, located at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Col. Peters retired in 1970, having been decorated with numerous distinguished awards including the Legion of Merit, the Joint Service Commendation Medal and designated as U.S. Army Logistician.

During his lifetime he also served as assistant professor in Military Science and Tactics at the University of Illinois. He was general manager of Brackett Oldsmobile/Cadillac in Effingham and was the first commanding officer of the Effingham National Guard Co. He also was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1978, they relocated to Dunedin, Fla., where he became active in local community service as treasurer for the Clearwater Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA); member of the Dunedin historical society and emeritus with the Edgewater advisory committee. He was known for his friendly smile and demeanor and always willing to extend a helping hand. The family would like to extend special thanks to our doctors and all our caregivers over the past few years and the Red Team staff of Suncoast Hospice for their care and support.

Col. Peters is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Evelyn A. (Niehaus) Peters of Teutopolis; four children, Thomas E. Peters and wife, Lou, of Dallas; Nancy A. (Peters) Lynch and husband, Frank Lane, of Charlottesville, Va.; Michael F. Peters and wife, Joy, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Cheryl A. Peters and husband, Charles "Chip" Harris, of Clearwater Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, William I. Peters of Effingham; sister, Joan (Peters) Siebert of Penny Farms, Fla.; and by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. and Gladys B. (Webb) Peters; brother, Calvin; and sister, Louella (Peters) Jansen.
