Paul was born Oct. 5, 1931, in Effingham, the son of Paul and Ruby (Adams) Taylor. Paul’s life centered on his love of family, friends, hunting, sports and music. In his early years, he worked at Vogt Sporting Goods in Effingham for his uncle, Frank Vogt. Paul was a great wing shot and won many trap shooting championships. Eventually, he became owner of the sporting goods. He always had a friendly ear during customers’ stories. As for his music, he played drums in high school. This led to him being a successful musician playing in a Dixieland/jazz band for more than 35 years. He played professionally with the Barbecues, a jazz group consisting of himself, great friend Chuck White, and his son, Paul. His musical connections and contributions helped others. With local musicians, he assisted in organizing cancer benefits calling on many jazz musicians of world fame, convincing them to travel to Effingham and play their music; they filled area venues to capacity. Paul also was on the board of directors at the First National Bank of Effingham for more than 30 years. He was a life member of the Effingham Sportsman’s Club, Effingham Elks Lodge 1016 and Madison Jazz Society. He served in the National Guard of Illinois. Paul’s friendly banter with all people was his calling. He never knew a stranger and helped any friend in need.
Paul is survived by his sons, Paul F. Taylor of Morehead, Ky., and John (Christy) Taylor of Effingham; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents; wife, Sally; and sisters, Shirley Claar and Betty Baldwin.
