ALTAMONT —
Elwin P. Bernahl, 93, of Altamont, died at 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at the Lutheran Care Center, Altamont.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Altamont, with the Rev. Clayton Vail officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, and one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial with military rites will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to KFUO radio, the Concordia Seminary, Lutheran Hour radio or Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 6409 North 200th Street, Altamont, IL 62411. Elwin Philip Bernahl was born April 25, 1919, in the Bethlehem Community, Effingham County, near Altamont. He was the son of Otto and Martha Muchow-Bernahl. Elwin was a life member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed his faith. After returning from his service to his country, Elwin married Esther Leppin on Jan. 27, 1946, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Together, Elwin and Esther were blessed with three children: Linda, Jeanne and Robert. When the children were growing up, Elwin spent a great deal of time being a grain farmer, besides tree trimming and painting before retiring in 1981. He proudly served his county as a veteran of the United States Army during World War II serving in Europe for 3 1/2 years in the European-African Middle Eastern theater and received one silver star and six overseas bars. Elwin was an active member of the Altamont community. He served numerous offices at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, as elder and trustee. He was a member of Effingham County Farm Bureau and Altamont VFW Post 7676.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Leppin Bernahl of Altamont; one son, Robert (wife, Cynthia Hulsizer) Bernahl of Philo; two daughters, Linda (husband, Charlie) Dahlheimer of St. Louis, and Jeanne (husband, Dale) Wolff of Altamont; one brother, Raymond (wife, Dorothy) Bernahl of Lincoln; one sister, Doris Ella Bernahl of Altamont; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lambert Bernahl; and one grandchild.
