MATTOON —
Daniel Lee Diel, 62, of Mattoon, formerly of Newton, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at his home.
Funeral services celebrating Daniel’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home, Newton, with Nate Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Island Creek Cemetery, rural Gila. Visitation will be two hours before the service. In loving memory of Daniel, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be left at www.blakefh.com.
Daniel was born on Dec. 15, 1950, in Effingham County, the son of Daniel Ebbert and Mary Ethyl (Ball) Diel. Daniel was a 1969 graduate of Newton Community High School and a 1973 graduate of Southern Illinois University.
Daniel was retired from the Canadian National Railroad after 35 years of service as a locomotive engineer. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. Daniel enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, reading and listening to music. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Daniel is survived by fiancee, Debbie Mote of Mattoon; three daughters, Sarah (Jay) Hughes of Gays, Kelly (Joe) Bialeschski of Champaign and Laura (Jeff) Finke of Champaign; eight grandchildren, Cameron Hughes, Chloe Diel, Bella Bialeschski, Logan Bialeschski, Michael Finke, Nick Finke, Tim Finke and Ashley Finke; brother, Harry (Jennifer) Diel of Jewett; and sister, Doris (Greg) Pickens of Wheeler.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elizabeth Prosser.
