ST. LOUIS —
Elsie Shirley Hammer, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at her son's home in St. Louis.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Altamont, with the Rev. Jason Rensner officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 28, 2013, at the Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, and from 12:30 p.m. until service time.
Elsie Shirley Braasch-Hammer was born Dec. 28, 1934, at home in Altamont. She was the eighth of nine children of Emil and Anna Klautsch-Braasch. She was then raised by her uncle Adolph and Louise Kroening-Braasch because of difficult economic times. Elsie was baptized in St. Paul Lutheran Church ALC and she confirmed her faith at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She later married Arlon Hugo "Ace" Hammer on July 21, 1962, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and he preceded her in death on June 2, 2007. Together, Elsie and Ace were blessed with three children, Robert, Terry and Sandra. When the children were growing up, Elsie worked at home as a beautician and later at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home as a certified nurse's assistant. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altamont. Most significant is that Elsie and Ace together raised a family. Memorials may be sent to Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, 203 E. Division Street, Altamont, Illinois 62411 and or the donor's choice.
She is survived by her two sons, Robert (wife, Karen) Hammer of Altamont and their daughters, Kaci Elizabeth Hammer, Emily Karel Hammer; and Terry Lynn Hammer of St. Louis and his daughter, Shawni Nicole Hammer; one daughter, Sandra (husband, Douglas) Stone of Altamont and their daughters, Whitney (husband, Blake) Heischmidt and Tori Michelle Stone; one sister, Mildred Julia Braasch-McEvoy of Lombard; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; six brothers, Cecil Emil Braasch, Clifford Wilhelm Braasch, Daniel Edgar Braasch, Arnold Theador Braasch, Frank Andrew Braasch and Oscar Emil Braasch; one sister, Rozella Henrietta Braasch.
