ALTAMONT —
Marian F. Berg, 84, of Altamont, died at 4:58 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Altamont, with the Rev. Dr. James F. Wright officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be conducted from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Burial rites will be conducted at Union Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. For those who prefer, memorials they may be directed toward the Altamont Lutheran Interparish School or the Immanuel After School Day Care, both at 203 East Division Street, Altamont, IL 62411 or the donor’s choice. Marian Florence Berg was born Jan. 1, 1928, in the Zion Community, Effingham County, near Altamont. She was the daughter of Albert and Julie Schwerdtfeger-Kirchoff. Marion was a life-long member of the Altamont community. She was baptized and confirmed her faith at Zion Lutheran Church as well as completing her elementary education in the church school. Marian married Raymond Paul Berg on June 6, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church. Together, Marian and Raymond were blessed with five children, Roger, Shirley, Brenda, Jerry and Larry. While the children were growing up, Marian and Raymond spent a great deal of time at the family business. She was the secretary and bookkeeper for the Berg Service Station before retiring in 2002. Marian was an active member of the Altamont community, was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a proud member of the Effingham County Republican Women.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond P. Berg of Altamont; three sons, Roger (Claudia) Berg of Altamont, Jerry (Margaret) Berg of Hinsdale and Larry (Coezette) Berg of Azle, Texas; two daughters, Shirley Asher of St. Louis, and Brenda Berg of Carbondale; one brother, Carl (Nancy) Kirchoff of Decatur; one sister, Lorraine Wolff of Altamont; one brother-in-law, Larkin Smith of Indianapolis; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Richard and his wife Imogene Kirchoff; four sisters, Gertrude and her husband John Winter, Alice and her husband Marlin Milleville, Charlaine Smith and Leoane Kirchoff in infancy; son-in-law, Hans Asher; and brother-in-law, Paul Wolff.
